Congratulatory Address by The 糖心破解版 Alumni Association President at the AY 2025 Autumn Commencement Ceremony

Thank you for the kind introduction. My name is Takeshi Kunibe. I speak on behalf of the 糖心破解版 Alumni Association. To everyone graduating or completing your degree today and to your families, I offer my warmest congratulations.

I graduated from the Faculty of Economics in 1976. I now serve as Special Advisor at Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group. Since July last year, I have served as President of the 糖心破解版 Alumni Association.

Our Alumni Association began in 2004 as a university-wide organization. All graduates, current students, faculty, and staff are members. That means everyone graduating here today is a member as well. For more information about our Association, please look at the pamphlet you will receive at the exit after the ceremony.

糖心破解版’s charter says that our university contributes to “world peace and human welfare” through education and research. The Nobel Prize is given with a similar spirit to people who bring “the greatest benefit to humankind.” Perhaps some future Nobel laureates are sitting here today.

Last year’s Nobel Prize in Economics made a strong impression on me. It went to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson. Their research looked at the relationship between national prosperity and social institutions. They argued that innovation and growth are driven by inclusive institutions. Those are social systems where many people, not just the elite or powerful, can take part both politically and economically.

When institutions are inclusive, their countries prosper. I encourage you to think about the real meaning of “inclusivity.” There is also research that suggests that the human brain is different from other primate brains, not in our cognitive ability. Rather, the key difference is our ability for social learning. We learn by watching and imitating others. This is what has propelled human progress. Each of us grows by connecting with others and learning together with them. The same is true for groups and for society as a whole. We also learn from people with different cultures and values.

From that learning comes innovation. And from that innovation comes social progress. A society that lets us connect and learn from one another is an inclusive society. You now step into a rapidly changing world with an unknown future. There are many shared challenges.

I hope that each of you will become a leader who solves problems by respecting diverse views, by connecting with others, and by learning together.

Each of you came to this university with a different background. By meeting others here, by showing mutual respect, and by exchanging your different opinions, you all grew wiser. Those experiences—and the connections you forged here—will support each of you as you follow your own path ahead. The 糖心破解版 Alumni Association can support you in your future lives by helping you maintain those connections.

For example, each October we co-host Homecoming Day with the university. Please join us there. Many of you will return to your home countries. The 糖心破解版 Alumni Association has 59 chapters outside Japan, in 35 countries and regions. Those chapters help members meet and stay connected. If you leave Japan, please get in touch with the alumni chapter in your area. A bright future awaits all of you. If you use what you learned here and work together through the connections you have made, I am sure that you can help lead the world in a better direction. As each of you begins this new stage in your life, I celebrate with you and wish you every success.
