The Donald Trump administration, which resumed power in January 2025, has sent shockwaves throughout not only America but the entire world. While postwar America had demonstrated steady progress in terms of human rights and democracy, the current polarization shows no signs of abating. The world has been stunned by the fact that America—the superpower that has played a central role in the postwar international order—has turned its back on international cooperation, pursued narrow national interests, and abandoned the promotion of universal values.

The world's excessive dependence on America is an undeniable fact. In an era when American power is relatively declining and emerging nations are experiencing remarkable growth, it may be argued that the world has begun moving toward the formation of a new order that does not rely solely on America. However, the Trump administration's moves have been so rapid that the resulting upheaval has been profound. Many humanitarian issues have been exacerbated, as evidenced by the devastating impact on international aid systems. The global free trade regime has also been severely shaken, threatening the very pillars of the postwar economic order. While President Trump, who favors mediation, has successfully brokered resolution to some regional conflicts, Ukraine and the Middle East continue to suffer under the ravages of war.

How, then, should we understand the trajectory of the Trump administration and the future of the international order? Why has America so rapidly transformed its approach to the world? Will this continue beyond the Trump presidency? What does America as a nation seek to prioritize in its domestic affairs? What forces drive these changes? How is it possible for an administration like Trump's to implement policies that break so dramatically with precedent? Is there anything left that can constrain the Trump administration?

This volume seeks to address such questions through the contributions of fifteen scholars who examine the Trump administration's domestic policies, foreign relations, and the perspectives of various nations as they observe the Trump presidency from multiple vantage points.

The discussions encompass a wide range of topics: What significance does the 2024 presidential election hold for American democracy and foreign policy? To what extent has presidential power expanded in contemporary America? What roles do Congress and policy institutions play? What do voters, particularly working-class Americans, seek? What function does religion serve? These and other questions are explored from diverse analytical perspectives. The volume also includes essays on Trump's foreign policy and the responses it has elicited from China, North Korea, Europe, and Latin America, enabling readers to engage in multifaceted consideration of America's relationship with the world.

This book is published as part of "UP+," a new series launched by University of Tokyo Press. Previously, the same editor, Professor Ryo Sahashi, published Biden's America in this series, which is designed to be accessible to students through readable prose and comprehensive bibliographies that facilitate further learning. While the volume is substantial—nearly 250 pages in two-column format—readers who engage with this work will gain a thorough understanding of the current debates in international politics, American studies, and American political research.
